About The Harris Firm LLC
An Alabama Family Law and Probate Firm Built on Word of Mouth.
Founded by Attorney Steven A. Harris in 2007, The Harris Firm LLC has grown from a small Birmingham practice into a statewide firm with offices in Birmingham, Chelsea, Huntsville, and Montgomery. The approach has never changed: clear communication, fair pricing, and clients who tell their friends.
The Harris Firm LLC handles family law, divorce, probate, and estate planning in courthouses across Alabama, with much of our uncontested divorce and estate planning work handled entirely by phone and email. Phone consultations are free for uncontested divorce and probate matters; contested family law consultations are $100.
In short: The Harris Firm LLC is an Alabama law firm founded in 2007 by Attorney Steven A. Harris, practicing family law, divorce, probate, and estate planning statewide from offices in Birmingham, Chelsea, Huntsville, and Montgomery.
How we work: Uncontested divorces and most estate planning documents are handled on flat fees quoted before you hire us. Contested family law matters are handled on a retainer billed against an hourly rate, usually quoted the same day you call.
Where we practice: Our attorneys appear in circuit, district, probate, and juvenile courts across Alabama, and the firm has practiced in both the Alabama state court and federal court systems for nearly two decades.
What sets us apart: Communication. When you call, you talk to a person. Our attorneys aim for monthly case updates and are reachable by email or scheduled call even during trial weeks — so you always know where your case stands and what it will cost.

How We Started and How We Grew
When Steven Harris opened the firm in 2007, it was a small Birmingham practice. The idea was simple. Handle family law and probate matters the way clients actually want them handled, with clear communication and fair pricing, and do it well enough that people tell their friends. That word-of-mouth is what built the firm.
Nearly two decades later, The Harris Firm LLC has grown into one of the larger family law practices in Alabama, with four offices and a team of attorneys covering the northern, central, and Birmingham-metro regions of the state. Steven has helped individuals across Alabama file uncontested divorces for almost that entire stretch, and the firm has practiced extensively in both the Alabama state court and federal court systems along the way.
What hasn’t changed is the approach. We still believe the client should always know what is happening in their case, what the next step is, and what it is going to cost. A lot of law firms lose sight of that as they grow. We have worked hard not to.
What We Handle
Our practice is built around four main areas. Most of what we do falls into one of them.
Family Law
This is the core of the firm. Child custody, child support, paternity, adoptions, protection from abuse, juvenile matters, contempt petitions, and modifications of existing orders. If your case involves a family relationship and a courthouse, our family law attorneys handle it.
Divorce
Both contested and uncontested. A contested divorce is one where you and your spouse cannot agree, and you need an attorney to argue your case to the judge — those run on a retainer billed hourly. An uncontested divorce is one where you both already agree on everything, handled on a flat fee. We also handle high-asset divorce, property division, retirement accounts, and military divorce.
Probate
When someone passes away, their estate often has to go through probate before assets can be distributed. We guide families through that process, from filing the petition and obtaining Letters through closing the estate — with or without a will, small estates included, and estates involving wrongful death or injury claims.
Estate Planning
Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, property deeds, and guardianships and conservatorships. The goal is to get your affairs in order so your family is not left guessing later. Many of these documents are handled at a flat fee.
The firm also handles personal injury and mass tort claims, working with experienced trial co-counsel on cases ranging from car accidents to national product litigation.
Four Offices, One Firm
We keep offices in four Alabama cities so most clients have an attorney within reasonable driving distance. Because much of our work, especially uncontested divorce, can be handled remotely, we help clients in counties across the state even where we do not have a physical office.

Straight About Cost
We try to be straight with people about money, because that is what we would want. Uncontested divorces are a flat attorney fee of $690 without minor children or $890 with minor children, plus the county filing fee — so you know the number before you hire us. Many estate planning documents, like a simple will or power of attorney, are also flat-fee.
For contested divorce and other contested family law matters, we work with you to set a retainer up front, billed against an hourly rate, and we can usually quote that the same day you call. Retainers for contested divorces start at $4,000 depending on the issues involved. No surprises halfway through.
Why Clients Choose Us
The Harris Firm LLC has prided itself on customer service and professionalism, and our online reviews from former clients reflect it. When you call our office, you talk to a person, not a machine. Our family law attorneys aim to provide monthly updates on cases and are available by email or for a scheduled call or meeting, even during a long week of trials or hearings. Communication is the thing our lawyers take the most pride in — you should be fully aware of what is going on in your case at all times.
There is more to the firm than casework, too. Our attorneys and staff run Christmas food drives at every office, sponsor an annual toy drive for children in the Montgomery juvenile courts, and put a float in the Prattville Christmas Parade each year. Several of our attorneys also take court-appointed and pro bono cases across the state.
