LEAD PAINT EXPOSURE
Lead paint poisoning has been known for a very long time, and can cause serious illnesses such as chronic neuropsychologic deficits, seizures, mental retardation, and nervous system disorders. There is no acceptable amount of lead exposure and it is stored in the bones when it is retained.
Today, the most serious ways in which children become exposed to lead poisoning are through lead-based paint in an apartment or house. Any child living in a home or apartment that contains lead-based paint could be at risk for lead poisoning.
It is crucial that children have the proper nutrition and get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals (especially calcium and iron) since good nutrition lowers the amount of swallowed lead that actually goes into the bloodstream and can also some of its toxic effects.
To help avoid lead poisoning in your children, you need to remove all lead-based paint, control and get rid of the dust and paint chip debris, prevent children from eating dirt (which could contain lead), change work clothes when going to and coming from a lead related job, and avoid using lead around the home.
Sometimes children’s toys and other items are recalled due to excessive lead paint levels. For instance, the BigBox Hockey Set was recalled in February 2010 for excessive levels of lead in the surface coating on the boards that form the hockey playing field.
Also, in January 2010 about 2100 toy military figures manufactured in China and sold at the Dollar Store and other discount stores in 2008 and 2009 were recalled due to the surface paint having excessive levels of lead. These action figures were imported by Jide Trading Incorporated.
